Software RAID under Linux next

Setting up Software RAID

  1. Make sure the kernel is compiled with RAID support:
    raidbox# cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities :
  2. Create partitions on disks to be combined in the RAID. Partition type should be "FD" (for RAID autodetect).
  3. Create /etc/raidtab:
    raiddev /dev/md0
    raid-level linear
    nr-raid-disks 2
    chunk-size 32 # Not used for linear
    persistent-superblock 1
    device /dev/sda1
    raid-disk 0
    device /dev/sdb1
    raid-disk 1
  4. Initialize RAID:
    raidbox# mkraid /dev/md0
  5. Verify that the RAID is running:
    raidbox# cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities : [linear]
    read_ahead 1024 sectors
    md0 : active linear sdb1[1] sda1[0]
